Facing my demons

Update on Tough times never last
So, after having sufficiently freaked out people with my previous post, with what S said and what my job situation looks like, I decided to take a break from blogging. Well, not "decided" as such - a break was forced upon me. By circumstances and my busy schedule.
Anyhoo. I decided I owed all the wonderful people, who left me comments and who called/emailed me after reading the previous post, an update.
S is not grounded any more. After reading Vinita and Dotthought's comments, I forwarded them to my husband and we decided to go with Vinita's suggestion and imposed a "30 minute violin practice" consequence on her. Anon's (n!) comment also helped me put things in perspective from S' side. So the practice requirement was not conveyed as a punishment but more as the consequence she needed to face for her action, along with lots of reassurances that we were/are not upset with her. And I am taking a day off on Monday to spend with her as per Desigirl's suggestion. Will take her out to the movies and lunch.
S and I have been writing in the journal (almost) regularly. Both of us look forward for the other to write in it. I even catch myself thinking of something from my childhood to put in there. She is getting an idea that all kids behave the way she did sometime or the other. I have explained to her that the most important part is what you do after you realize you made a mistake. If, after making a mistake, you keep repeating it, you are no better off than when you made the mistake the first time. But if you rectify your mistake and make sure not to repeat it, you have learned something from it. She still sometimes tells me she feels bad about it and every time I remind her "It happened, it is in the past, done and over with". I think that kind of reassures her.
As for "feel like killing myself" bit - a huge reassurance came to me from my mother in the form of an email. She wrote this -
I came to know about Mitthi's disappointment through your blog. Seems that she is going through some hormonal changes which are responsible for such feelings .Its a transitory phase and will be over soon ,but she needs special attention from both of you at present which you are providing without any dearth.I remember when you were the same age once in the night when i was lying besides you and talking to you affectionately you suddenly told me "mummy some times i feel like jumping in front of a car when i go to school '.And how worried i felt inside need not mention. But instantly i caressed you ,and made you realize that this act of your will shatter me and if you feel like this again pl. think of your ma and pa who won't and can't live without you .And after that i kept a secret watch on you and expressed my love and concern frequently.Afterwards you never uttered or felt like doing it again. This is an experience of a mother who so strongly loves her kids !Your careful handling of the situation will definitely lessen Mitthi's tensions .
So peeps, it runs in the family! The girls in this family are over-dramatic and will go to any lengths to get their parents' attention :D

Pretend you didn't read this...
...because then we can pretend I didn't write this.
Gmail now has a feature called "Take a break". You click on it and your screen gets shrouded in blue grey with a message that they'll be back in 15 minutes. It is really good for emailoholics like me. I wish the whole internet had such a feature so I wouldn't be tempted to blog-surf or browse the news sites when I am supposed to be studying for my exam. Which has been (re)scheduled for Monday (June 16th). I was supposed to take it two weeks back but couldn't because I was very sick. Which means I shouldn't even be writing this post. Oops!!
Ta! See you on the other side of Monday!!

The best Mother's day, yet feeling a little unloved
Got a lovely rose from M's daycare.

And a card that had her picture in the middle and hand prints on each side. And a beautiful finger-painted card from S. She had painted a bunch of purple grapes with her fingers and written "Love you a bunch" inside. (Don't have a picture to post). And she gifted me a few of her prized possessions - some beautiful colorful stones. These things made this day THE BEST for me.
Something else made me a little sad.
Nothing - NOTHING - from J. Not a card. Not a bunch of roses. He did remember to wish me a happy Mother's day right before he called his mom, and I say GOOD FOR HIM! If he can't remember the mother of is own children, then he deserves the whack on his head that he would have gotten if he'd forgotten. But not receiving a card from him hurt me more than I thought it would. Even though I got the most beautiful cards from the girls, and they are the ones who matter on this day, it did pinch a little that J didn't care enough to get me a card. On Mother's day, we went to a friend's place to celebrate his birthday, and on our way there we stopped at a store to buy a bouquet for him. Even then it didn't occur to J that he should at least get me some flowers too. I went in to buy the flowers and it sure was infuriating to buy those flowers when I knew J didn't remember to buy me anything.
Maybe I am making a huge deal out of nothing. He is a good father and a very good husband. But all through our marriage, there have been such occasions. On my first birthday after we got married, he said he didn't "feel like buying me roses or more than one card" when I asked him if he was getting me any. This from the man who would get me roses for no reason at all when we were dating.
Lately it has been "I didn't get the time". I don't buy that. If I can find the time to buy him a Father's day gift in advance ONE DAY before going to the hospital for my scheduled C-section, if I can drive in snow to buy him a Valentine's day card and gift, if I can take time out from a busy schedule to get him a birthday card and a gift - so can he. He just needs to plan it better. I have been trying to make him understand - and have failed. Even when we were living in Indore with his parents and I was completely dependent on him for shopping (wasn't allowed to go out alone - don't ask), I managed to get him a surprise bouquet of roses every damn year with a friend's help. Heck, I even managed to gift him a surprise bouquet when we came here even though I didn't drive at that time and there were no flower shops within a walking distance.
I know I am making a mountain out of a mole hill. He loves me more than anyone else in the world and that should be enough for me. I am not even mad about the damn roses or the gifts. In fact I asked him not to get me anything for my birthday this year because I want to buy a laptop next year. I am mad about the excuses. I am mad about how he makes it sound like he did remember but he is soooo busy that he couldn't step out to buy a card. It would be fine if he just accepted that he forgot/couldn't buy and said "sorry". That wouldn't be too hard now, would it? I would understand and maybe even laugh it off. But to say "You know how busy I am. How could I go?" insults me. You listening J?
Anyhoo. So, we fought over it and made up (Well, kinda. If we had truly made up, I wouldn't be writing this post, would I?). I decided that J WILL buy me flowers, whether he wanted to or not. So, on my next trip to the grocery store, I bought these for myself - from J.

And I coolly informed him that he is going to buy me flowers like this every 2 weeks. For ever. :)
For some reason, these flowers stank so bad that we spent a good half hour looking for a stinky diaper under the sofas and behind doors until it struck me that I had smelled that smell while I was grocery shopping too! Sure enough - we got a generous whiff of the "stinky diaper" smell when we performed a nasal investigation on the flowers!
It is time for me to go grocery shopping again. Will post a picture of the new flowers soon!

Last week of May'08
- Walked about 4-5 feet - without stopping or plonking her ass down! (Friday, May 30).
- Offered bottle to dadda and didi.
- Wiped mama's nose.
- "Cleaned" herself on the leg while taking a bath.
- Took shrieking to new levels.
- Raced up the stairs in a record minute. Yup - all 13 stairs! Never stopped for a second. TWICE this week. Safety gates, here I come!
- Once upstairs, raced into didi's room and looked at/grabbed all the treasure in amazement.
- Ate pulao for the first time.
- Tried to put on a sock.
- Tried to comb her hair with a doll's hair brush.
- Found a new strategy to pull socks off. Stand with one foot in front of the other, heel on toe. Press down with heel, pull the other foot back, thus removing the sock. Repeat with the other foot in front.
- Climbed into her rocker by herself and sat there observing everything.
- Ate Chinese food - Egg fried rice. And preferred it over plain ol' bread 'n butter!

Yup, I did all this!
I was even asked to read Ramayan or BhagvadGita every day. Now, I am not against reading them but just because I was pregnant? In lieu of the murder mysteries and thrillers I was so hooked on? Thanks but no thanks! In retrospect I think I was the most difficult pregnant DIL to ever live with. I had a mind of my own and didn't hesitate in using it.
Friends kept insisting at gatherings that I should sit down and eat first and rest. I humored some, and blasted some. Then a friend threw me a baby shower. We planned it together and decided the shower would be a women-only shower. Since we had a friend coming in from NJ and another cousin of mine flying in from Chicago, I decided to have a post-baby-shower party at my place. I planned a simple menu that could be prepared with minimal efforts. Dahi Bade, Veg Biryani, Moong Dal Pakode, some other chaat items and a sweet dish (I forget what it was). I prepared everything before leaving for the shower in the afternoon so that I wouldn't have to do anything when I came back. We had about 5 or 6 families (including ours) gathered. When I got back from the baby shower, I found J in a foul mood. I immediately thought it was because we were late but he told me that he was ticked off because a friend had been insisting that we order food from outside. Even after J told him that all the food was ready. When we came back, this friend again started telling his wife to disregard what I was saying and order up some idli-dosa from a local restaurant. That's when I lost my cool and yelled "What about the food I have already cooked? And why are you treating me like an invalid?" This is a very dear friend and I really appreciate the concern he and his wife show for us all the time, but I guess I was completely fed up with the mollycoddling by then. He understood after that and backed off, I made a deal with his wife that I will let her serve the food and I'll "rest" and everything ended on a happier note after that. I did feel sorry (and still do) for having yelled at him but I believe he left me no choice.
HUGE Milestone!

Old news. Still True.
Rule 1: Life is not fair -- get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping -- they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
